Baseball Season!

Georgia starting pitchers Justin Grimm, Jeff Walters and Michael Palazzone on Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2010 in Athens, Ga.

Baseball season is now upon us. Rejoice and hope these three can keep the ball down in the zone.

The shoot after the jump....

So its February. Its 34 degrees out and windy. This is not baseball weather by any definition. So when I was asked to photograph Georgia's starting rotation, I instantly went for the batting cages. Its warm and the light is controllable.

Now I've never been good at the large, group portraits. More than one person and i start losing some sense of creativity. Plus these guys had about 5-10 minutes as they had to chart the pitches. So i went simple.

Its a 3 light setup. ISO 100 @ 250/5.6. WB on Flash. Three speedlights. CTO Softbox @ 1/2 power camera right. Rimlight behind CTB 1/4 power. Red gelled accent light camera left, perpendicular to the subjects 1/4 power.

I wanted to do one of pitcher Justin Grimm. The old "light in the glove" trick. Would have worked better if i had more time to do it. But it works.

(And Happy Birthday to my Grandmother and Abraham Lincoln)
