Athfest 2010

Spring Tigers lead singer Kris Barratt plays in the middle of the pouring rain during AthFest on Friday, June 25, 2010 in Athens, Ga.

Last weekend was the annual Athfest music festival, a showcase of 150+ bands that draws indie rock hipsters crowds downtown to suffer heatstroke enjoy a variety of music on a couple of open stages and at a bunch of venues here in town.

Photos & stories after the jump

Anyone who's a regular reader or follower of my work, i love concert photography, especially creative concert photography that shows more than someone at a microphone. There's so much artistry and creativity in the music, so why shouldn't the photos reflect that?

The worst photos come from the daytime main & second stages. Its bad, overhead light of a person on a stage. There's very little you can do creatively beyond waiting for the light to change... although there was no shade at all. The vendors selling water for $2-dollars-a-bottle kinda sucked.

The best photos from this event come during the club crawl, when you have the biggest & best bands going on at some unfortunate hour of the morning, but generally at the 40 Watt Club, which makes for great pictures. My big problem with the club crawl this year is that it was ridiculously spread out. Not everything is within walking distance of one another. So i went out and tried to see bands that were playing in clubs that were on the way back to the office.

One giant "THANK YOU" to the 40 Watt Club, their nuclear powered air conditioning and their cunning use of water jugs on the bar so i could refill my water bottle.

My other big complaint is that photographers don't need to be on stage beyond in the back or on the sides. You don't need to be on stage getting a wide-angle shot from right in front of the lead singer or guitarist or whomever. The audience did not come there to see you, they came to see the bands and that is disrespectful to the audience.

This is exactly what I'm talking about; I used the stuff hanging above the bar at the 40 Watt, including the lights, to frame the subject and make it really interesting.
