High School Football : Loganville vs Clarke

Clarke Central's Tony Glenn intercepts a pass on the first play of the game as the Loganville Red Devils lead the Clarke Central Gladiators 15-14 at halftime on Thursday, August 28, 2009 in Athens, Ga. The play was reversed on a pass interference penalty.

Now i realize that not all of my loyal readers have any desire to read or look at football photos of any sort, alas this is what makes me money.

This week was a local game at Clarke Central. Seemed like a pretty good matchup. Shot the first half and felt good, beyond sweating to death. Timing was a tad rusty at first. Shot from my knees most of the game. Good to try and get into a rhythm before Georgia football starts.

Kept trying to do a "Peter Read Miller" shot with the 80-200 when the teams were inside the 15 yard line. Either the ball went the other way or the kid just didn't dive or jump or do anything remotely interesting visually. Got my shirt wet for no reason.

(The focus just did not come back in time as the frame before this was perfect beyond being out of focus)

She's not vain, really.

Late Inning Rally .... Scratcher?????

I have seen my share of late-inning heroics in my life of watching baseball. There's rally caps, rally towels, rally monkeys and even the ever-popular Matt-Freakin-Stairs-Rally-Moonshot, but never in my life have i come upon this.

Top of the Seventh, Madison County leading by 2 with one out and runners on. I'm set up on the 3rd base side, ready for a play at the plate to end the game and i look over and the kids from Sprayberry do something very unexpected - The rally scratch? I'm still perplexed.

Madison County hung on to win.

Hoops. Hoops. Hoops.

After looking at many people's work, i'm really wanting H.S. Hoops to be in black and white but strobed. I just like the contrasts and the feel of the photos. There's some serious warmth in the photos, or thats how i look at them.

Anyways, this was my 2nd take on H.S. basketball and again its mainly the ladies. Made for good photos.

Tubariffic

Well, I figure someday that public high schools will find a way to work well with the press, what with their desire to have media releases and other silly paperwork on file before you even bring a camera into the school. In short, its this: it's not my responsibility nor my news gathering organization's responsibility to know whether or not the subjects of documentary photography in a public school have all of your required paperwork taken care of.

So after some skillful negotiating, I ended up going for some environmental portraits of the subject who is quite the tuba player. I lit it with two flashes, one acting as a fill and one acting as a rimlight and just asked him to play his tuba. I think the shots ended up better than him playing in band class.

37 Degree Football

While the pictures don't exactly show it, it was bloody cold out during Athens Academy's opening round playoff game. 37 degrees out with a windchill. Thankfully, there was a running clock come 4th quarter (42-7 blowout) thus we all go to warm up quick.

This is week 2 of good light during Friday night football. And by good light, I mean 320th at 2.8 at 1600.

Friday Night Lights

Well, i had one of the best nights I've had shooting High School ball. For the D2X shooters, you can pull 1600 ISO with little noise. You can pull 3200 ISO with some noise. These were all shot 1600 at either 250 or 320, all wide open at 2.8. Clarke Central has some nice lights for high school and it seemed to work well.

I really was enthused to get out there, mainly because it was the only game i shot this week. For you non-sportsshooters or the newer once, i just tried to focus on the game and the plays. I try to stay on the QB and look where he looks and either stay with him after the pass (when he gets leveled) or follow the pass to try and get the catch. Most defensive backs say that they watch the QBs eyes to get an idea of where the play is going. I highly recommend it.

Not much jube, very low scoring (14-7 Clarke) and lots of inside handoffs away from the camera. I didn't mean to shoot just Derrick Smith (5 in Red) but he's the one who made all the plays.
