BMX Luck
Andrew Wickham does a trick on a BMX bicycle in front of the Chapel at University of Georgia on Tues., Jan 26, 2010 in Athens, Ga.
Every once in awhile, the photo gods smile on you.
I was walking across campus to an otherwise unphotogenic assignment through the blustery wind and out of the corner of my eye, i saw this guy doing tricks on a BMX bike in front of the Chapel.
I knew that one story had already fallen through visually and what i was off to photograph was something that was photographed two or three times last week. So if i could pull off a dominant visual, it could lead the front page. Such is the way of life in community journalism.
I worked it for about 10 minutes, made a few nice frames and the one above ended up the front page image.

Three Angles of the Same Play
Georgia forward Trey Thompkins (33) goes for a slam dunk as Tennessee faces Georgia in the first half of an NCAA men's basketball game at Stegeman Coliseum on Sat. Jan. 23, 2010 in Athens, Ga. (AP Photo/David Manning)

Generally at basketball I will set up a few remote cameras. Sometimes you get positive results and sometimes you pull it off and then some.

RedKlay in the Studio
Local hiphop artists Redklay in the ABH studios in Athens on Wed. Jan 13, 2010.
It was an interesting shoot. I had two white lightnings grid'ed from the rear corners with warming gels on them and two speedlights with 1/4 grids on them coming from the sides. As for a fill I was using my orbis ringflash with a CTO gel on it.
For a five-minute photo shoot, not bad. Not 100% what i wanted but the light looks good.
I'm still trying to master using this ringflash. I like it for a fill and I'm sure it will look great for fashion. However the third time out of the gate, it fell apart. So I'm not 100% sure about durability but I'm in contact with Orbis and I'm sure that there will be a good resolution.

Witness the Apotheosis at Go Bar
It has been a LONG TIME since I've listened to anything that could even remotely be considered Goth/Industrial/Darkwave. Probably about 10 years.
So imagine my surprise when i find a local darkwave band opening up for Shitty Candy.

Sh!tty Candy and the Circus Peanuts! Take 2, Pt. 1
I'm breaking this up into two posts. This is pt 1. Tomorrow will be Pt 2.
I criticized my work from the first time i saw this show. I wasn't happy. It wasn't how this band SHOULD look or how I wanted my photos to look.
Needless to say, the second time around is always better.
More female punk debauchery after the jump.

Sunlight shines on the face of a woman at Underground Atlanta on Sunday, Jan. 10, 2010.
Over the weekend, i had to travel to the arctic that was Downtown Atlanta to cover some of the legislative festivities.
Realizing i was given the wrong time, i walked around the Capitol area to kill some time.

Diving!
Brooke George of Clemson dives during 3-meter springboard competition during the Georgia Diving Invitational and Shootout on Monday at Gabrielsen Natatorium at the University of Georgia on Monday, Jan. 4, 2010 in Athens, Ga.
Despite working around top-flight sports programs at UGA, I don't get to many of the tertiary or non-revenue sports that truly deserve the attention.
Swimming & Diving is one of them. Despite being ranked #1, having Olympians on their squad, and being coached by Jack Bauerle (who has Olympic Credentials), I've never gotten to any of their competitions. Until now. I've never shot diving before at the NCAA level and haven't at the HS level since Florida.
Now the Gabrielsen Natatorium here at UGA is a top flight facility. Light wasn't too bad thanks to the new cameras in the world, 2.8/1000th/3200 ISO And i got access - pool deck, and the 10m platform to shoot from as it was 3m and 1m going off at the same time. I could get more overhead of the 1m diving but the 3m dives were much more interesting. Getting on the 5m platform with a wide made a very interesting photo. Alas this would be better suited with a remote in the future although the divers i shot wide were out of contention and during the prelims.
A giant thanks to the ladies of the Iowa State team for explaining what the dive numbers mean.
Tennessee diver Kelly Marx dives during one-meter springboard competition during the Georgia Diving Invitational and Shootout on Monday at Gabrielsen Natatorium at the University of Georgia on Monday, Jan. 4, 2010 in Athens, Ga.

Georgia diver Hannah Moore dives during 3-meter springboard competition during the Georgia Diving Invitational and Shootout on Monday at Gabrielsen Natatorium at the University of Georgia on Monday, Jan. 4, 2010 in Athens, Ga. Moore won the event with a score of 306.65.

25 Degrees? No Problem.
As someone who loves the night sky, the light-pollution folks might have a point.
Tonight is going to be the most clear and dark sky that we've got for a long time because of how brutally cold its going to be. So i decided to try and photograph this old stone chimney i found at Lake Herrick on the Campus of the University of Georgia. Naturally, i wanted to try to do a night/star trail shot. I like that stuff. (ISO 100, f/4, 15 minutes)
Alas..... there's a bit of FAIL here. The sky glow from the Athens & the college just washes out the sky and totally kills the effect. Same with every church and landmark around here - someone always puts up a streetlight. Makes me jealous of those who live in the desert southwest.

Vacation! Dulles Airport
Thats no shopping mall.... its an airport. More specifically, Terminal B at Washington Dulles International Airport.
Its my trip home and with a place like this, how can it not make for good photos?
Fuddruckers hamburger and a Sam Adams. Perfect preflight food.
Thats the plane i would be flying back to Atlanta on. An Airtran Boeing 717.
Another 737 taxing with the original Dulles terminal in the background.
Really, this is an airport. As Everyone i know needs to buy a Brooks Brothers suit at an airport.
It was a neat ad, with all the yellow. Had to wait a few minutes for people to walk by.
A 737 waits for clearance for take-off behind us.
Its the station for the forthcoming train at Dulles.
